Recently I heard the Lord speak, "Peace like a river." I had been asking the Holy Spirit for words for his people to encourage them. He quickly answered that prayer and led me to this verse:
For thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip, and bounced upon her knees.
(Isaiah 66:12)
The verses surrounding Isaiah 66:12, speak a lot about comfort and restoration. The entire chapter has messages of judgement, hope and restoration. Isaiah 66:12 highlights the future glory of God’s people and the promises He has for them. God identifies with His people, expressing His desire to care for them like a mother cares for her children.
This metaphor highlights the protective and nurturing nature of God’s character. We can see His heart, how He yearns to provide for the physical and spiritual needs of His people. The flow of peace like a river can be understood as part of the transformation process. As we trust and abide in Him, healing and joy will come...He is faithful and keeps every promise.
Understanding the context of Isaiah 66:12 helps tremendously. The backdrop of the Babylonian exile adds significant weight to God’s faithfulness in keeping promises. The Jewish people were longing for comfort, peace, and restoration after experiencing great devastation and loss. Isaiah assured them that God had not abandoned them and His heart was towards their healing.
This prophetic scripture serves as a modern day reminder that regardless of our circumstances, God remains faithful. He is our source of comfort and peace. His hearts desire is love... to heal, nurture and mature us. We are never alone in our struggles. When challenges arise, rather than allowing anxiety to torment us, we can seek Him, the truth of His word and find that His peace can overflow in our hearts like a river. His peace is supernatural peace, not our own fleshly efforts to calm ourselves. His peace transforms and fills our hearts with His presence and love, it's a calm that we recognize could only be of Him. His peace truly does surpass all understanding. I'm praying for each of you "peace like a river". Shalom dear friends!
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:7)
